Two new varieties made it onto the RL for 2022/23 season - Champion and KWS Dawsum - both varieties boasting high treated yields and good agronomic properties.

KWS Dawsum (NEW)

  • Excellent disease resistance, with one of the best untreated yields field trials.
  • Good resistance to mildew, yellow rust, brown rust and Septoria tritici.
  • Not OWBM resistant and moderately susceptible to fusariam ear blight.
  • Suitable for sites across the UK, on heavy and light soils as well as a wide drilling window (mid-September to end January).

Champion (NEW)

  • The ultimate barn filler, topping the 2022/23 RL on highest available yield, but has a relatively low specific weight (74.8kg/hl AHDB).
  • Good disease resistance package for mildew, yellow rust, Septoria tritici and is OWBM resistant.
  • Moderately susceptible to fusarium ear blight and brown rust.
  • Not recommended to be sown in an early drilling slot due to its rapid growth (late September to mid-February).
  • Suitable for all soil types and makes an excellent second wheat.

Gleam

  • Popular best selling Group 4 hard last year.
  • Consistent high yields, and reasonable grain quality (76.3kg/hl AHDB).
  • Now offers an average disease resistance package, with 5.0 for brown rust and 6.0 for Septoria tritici.
  • Yellow rust has broken down in the last year and now holds a score of 3.0.
  • Gleam is also OWBM resistant.
  • Suitable to be drilled in all regions on all soil types, with a drilling window of early October to end December.

Group 4 Softs

Also at the high end of the yield spectrum of the RL, the strong agronomic packages of G4 soft wheats have excelled in recent years where extreme weather conditions have prevailed.

Fram Variety Highlights

Two new varieties on the list, which could offer the market something different. RGT Saki and LG Skyscraper remain the two most popular varieties, however RGT Bairstow offers a good agronomic package and high yield but is yet to be seen in a commercial position.

RGT Bairstow (NEW)

  • High yielding variety with good grain quality and an excellent disease package as well as being OWBM resistant.
  • Can be grown across all of the UK with a consistant average yield of 103 for East and West sites and 100 for North.
  • This variety is yet to be seen in a commercial position.

LG Skyscraper

  • Consistantly high yielding variety, which remains one of the highest yielding soft wheats on the 2022/23 recommended list.
  • Suitable for all regions of the UK on all soil types.
  • Has also proven to grow well as a second wheat.
  • Very high tillering variety, good for grass weed competition, but has fairly average agronomics.
  • Drilling window of October to January.

Group 3 Softs

With the potential for extra premium, G3 soft wheats have great gross margin potential with great all round agronomic packages available for certain varieties.

KWS Astronomer

  • This relatively stiff-strawed variety has given high treated yields in the East region and on heavier soils.
  • Strong all round agronomic package.
  • Very high yield potential in an early sowing situation.
  • Highest rating for resistance to Septoria Tritici for a Group 3 variety.
  • It has high resistance to yellow rust and brown rust.
  • Orange wheat blossom midge resistance.
  • Very strong specific weight scores which is a highlight for millers.

Available Marketing Contracts

Growing a variety with high yielding qualities like your barn fillers, but with the potential for bringing home a £15/t premium is an attractive option. High proteins coming from crops grown on more fertile land can bring problems with the max 12.5% protein requirement.

G2 Milling Wheats

The highlights of the Group 2 milling varieties include consistent high yielding qualities that also offer the potential for additional marketing opportunities.

Two new varieties in the UKFM Group 2’s - KWS Palladium and Mayflower. The varieties in this group remain very similar in agronomics and grain quality. KWS Extase remains the highest yielding and most popular variety.

KWS Extase

  • UKP bread wheat, available for export.
  • KWS Extase has high Hagbergs and specific weights.
  • Early-maturing variety has given high treated yields and has performed well even in a late sowing situation.
  • It is a medium-tall variety with relatively stiff straw.
  • Exceptionally high yields in untreated UK trials.
  • It has high resistance to yellow rust, brown rust and mildew.
  • It also has the highest rating for resistance to septoria tritici for a bread-making variety.

KWS Siskin

  • UKP bread wheat available for export.
  • Agronomy: This short-strawed variety has performed well in early sowing situations, a first-cereal situation and on heavier soils.
  • It has moderate resistance to lodging but responds well to plant growth regulators.
  • KWS Siskin has high resistance to septoria tritici, mildew and yellow rust.
  • It has a tendency to sprout, so should be given priority at harvest.
  • Millers comments that Siskin has shown a degree of variability in its baking performance.

KWS Palladium

  • Marketed as the super clean bread maker with harvest security built in.
  • Boasts a very high untreated yield, and looks to be a good partner to KWS Extase with a slightly earlier drilling date (no earlier than last week in September) short and stiff, with early maturity it also performs well across all soil types however high sterility risk areas should be avoided.
  • A very clean variety, with a good disease package.
  • It is also believed to carry the Pch1 Rendezvous resistance gene to eyespot but this hasn’t been verified in Recommended List tests.

As the yields of modern milling varieties remain relatively high, greater attention to nitrogen inputs is required than ‘older’ varieties to achieve the necessary protein quality and gain maximum return.

  • The only Group 1 variety with resistance to orange wheat blossom midge.

  • Stiff strawed and short variety.
  • Its awned ear gives Skyfall a tendency to sprout, prioritise at harvest.
